Dorothy Lake #1072 — Apr. 28, 2003

Simply a quiet little hike for two folks that wanted to get out of the house. The road was clear to the trailhead. We were the only ones there and almost decided to park in the middle but reasonably parked off to the side. We didn't make it to the lake but turned back within about a half mile of it, if not closer. The trail only has sporadic snow patches that will probably be gone any day. There were about five trees to navigate over and under. A set of three are within twelve feet of each other. Lots of evidence of trail maintenance to come. There are large piles of lumber waiting for work crews. Bugs were about but were lethargic. They'd buzz our ears but not settle or even keep up with us as we walked along. Even without making it to the lake it was nice to hike such a usually busy trail without worrying about traffic. Definitely a hiker's luxury.

To take advantage of a rainless Sunday we headed up hwy 2 leaning toward Barklay Lake as a possible hike. Got to the FS road and found the road closed sign just off the Hwy. The road looked like it was turning to mush, so we headed for the Miller River Road knowing that at least a road walk would be scenic there. We drove to just before the 7 mile marker at the concrete stream crossing after passing the very nice people clearing the blow down across the road. The snow on the road was a snowcone consistency. Very soft and slushy, and around 1.5 ft. deep at the trailhead. The trail started out snow free with patches further on. 3 or 4 trees across the trail at the crumbling boardwalk, with more down just passed the wilderness sign. We hiked to the bridge and the falls were roaring with spring melt. The breezes blowing were alternately warm and cold. We had only gators and boots so we turned back here with the snow much deeper past the bridge. No crowds, no rain, great day for this hike.

The original plan was to hike past Dorothy Lake and head towards Snoqualmie Lake. Unfortunately as we got to about the Fifth mile of the Miller River Rd., there were two huge trees and about three smaller ones across the road, rendering it impassable by the Jeep. Since we were there, we decided to trek the 4-4.5 miles up to the Dorothy Lake trailhead. I mean, how hard could some road mileage be? Well up the road, past the bridge, the snow kept getting deeper and became a 2-3 mile stair-stepping adventure. Finally, getting to the trailhead, we went up to the lake and encountered 2-3 blowdowns, snow, holes in the bridges, and lots of water running over the trail...We came back down, climbed over the trees and quite happily sat in the Jeep. It was a nice day to be out hiking, despite the obstacles. :0)

I wanted to go to Eagle Lake via Eagle Creek, but FS 6514 was snowed in about two miles from the road end. This hike was nearby, the road was snowy but driveable, and so I did ""Plan B"". There was intermittent snow on the trail, but nothing to make the way hard to find. This is a very rough and rooty trail, but someone has left numerous cut logs next to the path at several different locations. It appears a whole series of staircases may be in this trail's future. Let's hope so, it needs them. The lake is pretty nice, with some dark granite cliffs for dramatic effect. There was a break in the weather which was a big improvement over the rain I prepared for. I checked out the Outflow Spur trail at the near end of the lake, which leads to a couple of decent picknicking spots. I left at 3:25, and was back at the car at 4:20.
