This was a fun trip for us but a slightly nerve wracking as the trail has some steep parts to it initially. Regardless, it's not to hard for younger children as long as they are supervised. My 3 yr old is a big, fast and busy guy. We held his hand on the steep parts (roughly first 1/4 mile of hike down to the river). The loop is about 1.8 miles long. When done with the 1.8 mile loop, we took the small trek to look at the falls. Not far at all from the parking area. THAT was the worst part for me (from a mothers perspective) as the sudden drop off at the lookout for the falls, makes one catch their breath as their stomach drops. It naturally makes any parent nervous. Granted there is chain link fence, it's not very secure at the bottom (base of fence) and is loose enough somebody could potentially get hurt or fall through. Beautiful views and breathtaking drops. Trees engulf you as you look up into the sky. Just awesome. *note* There is a old dead fallen tree stump towards the switchback that was just in the way but no big deal really. 80 degrees at 8pm it was a perfect hike and I had a easy time laying my busy guy down for bed at the end too! LOVE nature.

We parked at the closed gate at Falls View CG. After doing the short Fallsview Loop Trail which takes you to an upper view of the falls, we descended 200 feet in 0.1 mile to the raging brown water (normally white) of the Big Quilcene River. The 1.5 loop trail follows the Big Quilcene River through a canopy of maples and mosses with a variety of ferns on the forest floor. At 0.5 mile you will see a trail left which will be your return to the TH. There was a variety of fungi along the trail. We had rain the entire hike with strong winds at the upper viewpoint!

It’s well worth swinging by Falls View Campground near Mt. Walker to cap off a day of great hiking. This would also be a perfect hike for very young children -- short with lots of diversions! We did this on our way home from Mt. Zion and were pleasantly surprised by this nice little 1.5 mile loop to Falls View Canyon along the Quilcene River. The falls themselves can be viewed right off the parking area, about .1 from the trailhead. I wish you could see them from the river as they are really pretty spectacular, especially now with lots of water. The canyon loop trail starts to the left of the sign. It is a lovely, very well maintained little trail. The rhodies are just coming into their glory. Also blooming now are miner’s lettuce, sea foam, false Solomon’s seal, Oregon grape, wood violet, bleeding heart, star flower, and the salmonberry on their way out. The entire way is lined with tons of ferns (I saw at least 6 varieties) and lichen floating in the breeze from the trees. There’s a very nice spot to sit by the river with a streamlet falling in nearby. We enjoyed watching an ouzel catching insects against the green, green water slipping over the colored rocks below. What a pretty spot! Pics are at: http://www.flickr.com/photos/51278183@N05/sets/72157629807209332/

#1 of the 4 short hikes we did today. The faals are nice, and the ferns on this trail, some almost as tall as me.
