We arrived at 10:45am on a bright and sunny Sunday, and the parking lots were about halfway full. Don't forget to buy the appropriate parking pass because parking enforcement does frequent checks. The trail was in good condition, muddy in some spots due to rain the day before. We hiked in on the Franklin Falls trail and hiked out on the Wagon Road with a toddler and a dog.
This is a great trail for kids--hiking alongside the river on the Franklin Falls side leaves plenty for kids to see, and it's good motivation for them to keep going. I recommend bringing a hiking pack for small children--our 2.5 year old was able to hike up most of the steps on the Franklin Falls side, but he eventually tired out and needed a lift. The rock steps near the falls get slippery, so make sure to wear shoes with good tread.
Hiking back on the Wagon Road Trail was peaceful and quick. Most hikers seem to go out and back on the Franklin Falls side, so take the Wagon Road if you want a less busy hike.
We took our time since our toddler likes to look at everything, and there were plenty of spots where you could sit for a snack break. We left at around 2pm, and while the parking lot was busy, people were coming and going so there seemed to always be a parking spot available.
Make sure to pack out your trash, and if you have a furry friend, please don't leave dog poop bags on the trail. We noticed a good number of poop bags on the side of the trail, especially at the beginning.
