Frog Mountain (USGS Blanca Lake and Green Trails Monte Cristo (1991) Quadrangles From Highway 2 take the Beckler River Rd. (#65) about 14 miles to Jack Pass at ca. 2600 ft. The first several miles are paved and beyond that the road is in excellent condition (30-35 mph). Park in a large open area. Follow Road 610 (blocked off, but marked on a steel post) about 150 yards east until you can see a large gravel pit. On the right is a steep hollowed out rock gully. Ascend about 50 vertical ft. to a flat area and find a very old logging road (abundant slide alder, some vine maple and a few little streams running down it). This can be followed to 3150 ft., where it appears to end. This road appears on the Green Trails map. Head up slope in an easterly direction, taking the path of least resistance to attain Frog Mountain's west ridge. Continue eastward to the top at 4872 ft. There are two summits, one tree-covered and one bare, both of which gave virtually identical altimeter readings. The climb is best done in spring when the slopes are snow-covered. We found consolidated snow, but sank in a few inches in places. Later in the year the area could be brushy. Two elderly has-beens took 4- 1/4 hours up, including some floundering around at the start of the route and 1 hour, 35 minutes down, including a lunch stop part way down.
