Beware of: road conditions

First, the drive into the Middle Fork is so amazing.  I love it every time.

The road ends and then the short gravel road goes into the trailhead.  There are massive potholes in this short 100 or so yards.  My truck handled it fine.  And, I saw smaller cars in the parking lot.  But, it would be wise to leave your drifting car at home.  There were a few parking spots left at 10:30 on a Sunday morning.

But, Holy Moly, watch out if you are doing other hikes in the area.  Many, many cars parked on the side of the road.  Every single car that blocked the road (by being outside the white line) had "Tow" written on them.  So, someone is out enforcing this stuff.  And, your being a jerk anyway by blocking a pretty narrow road with limited sitelines.

Bathrooms at the Trailhead were clean and still had some toilet paper.  So, someone is keeping an eye on this.

The trail itself is an excellent condition making the steep, but short, hike easier than expected.

There were not many bugs.  No snow at this elevation.  And, the trail was bone dry.

The view at the top is really great.  I stayed for an entire hour and geeked out with my hardcopy maps and analog compass.  It gave a great chance to practice orienteering with all the great peaks in the area (Quartz, Bessemer / S Bessemer, Teneriffe, Mt Si, Rattlesnake, Preacher, and Caroline).  I got to try out this new orienteering invention I created.  So, I was stoked about that.  But, it needs some improvements.

Although, interestingly, the massive peaks behind Stegasaurous Butte seem to be unnamed on any map.  How can that be?  They are huge and distinct.

Not many people on this 80 - 90 degree day.  I saw a couple people on the way up.  A family arrived while I was on the summit.  And a couple rock climbers were descending from somewhere that did not have a trail.  All were very friendly.  No one called me a nerd.

The trail begins behind the bathrooms, and is well maintained and wide. Today was national Trails Day and there were multiple work parties in the area. They were depositing gravel and digging channels on this particular trail. Thank you to those workers. The view at the top is beautiful. There’s still a little snow on the peaks. We saw lots of families with young children and even toddlers and several dogs on leashes. It was a very enjoyable day.

We went at 8:30am on a Tuesday and were the only ones in the parking lot and on the trail. As others have said, the potholes in the parking lot were pretty bad so definitely make sure you slow down coming off the pavement. The trail is in good condition and the view is absolutely worth the short hike.

Beautiful, lush  Greenacrest with many small wildflowers in bloom. Smooth wide trail for most of the way, with some large stairs. Nice view of the valley from the top, a bit if a cl8mb to get there. Large potholes on the road but go slow and you should be able to make it around.
