The trail was not too busy on a Friday afternoon. I made the round trip in about 3.5 hours with my dog, including a 30 minute lunch stop at the lake. The only bugs were right by the water but they weren't too bad.

watch out for the big pot hole on the road in. It's right where the paved road turns to gravel.

If you own a pee cloth (Kula or otherwise), I recommend bringing that even to the toilet at the trailhead. Paper quickly runs low when staffing is uncertain.

What a delightful trail to honor Ira Spring, the late hiking guidebook author who played a key role in the history of WTA, serving on its Board of Directors from 1982 until his passing in 2003.
That footbridge across Mason Lake is quite impressive, too. I would have liked to witness them felling that tree and then situating it across the water.

We arrived around 1pm and the lot was nearly full with cars parked on the west side of the road. We easily found a spot in the main lot and headed up toward the lake. Around mile <1 there is a creek at the bridge to fill up with water. We did not see any other water sources before Mason Lake. Once you get to the steep switchback the trail feels like it really starts. There are around 5 switchbacks until you get to the top. The Rock with the Ira Springs plaque has shifted but it's still there. Once we arrived at the lake we stayed left and followed the signs for the main trail and chose three campsites. There was only one other group camping. Most people were leaving from day use. Sadly, we saw several areas where people left toilet paper and trash. There is a toilet which is clearly marked at the entrance of the lake. Although the campsites are beautiful, they are not peaceful as this has become a hugely popular destination. If we had more energy and foresight, we would have prepared ourselves to continue further to another lake for a more peaceful escape. I won't say where, but if you look at your map it will be obvious. Leave no trace.

***There is a construction detour on I-90E that is not indicated on GPS so be prepared to take a further exit and reroute. Also, there is a large pothole as soon as the cement road transitions to gravel that you may miss.

Beautiful trail. Very underrated, and pictures don't do it justice. Steep incline, then it levels off. Very well maintained and clean bathroom.

We arrived at the trailhead at 7:15 and it was half full. Toilet was stocked with paper. Great trail with a section a good views. The lake was serene except the bugs. As other side, not bitting bugs yet just buzzing in your face. Very busy trail and a lot of dogs, some off leash. All dogs were behaved but some folks did leave poo bags on the side of the trail, which often get forgotten on the way back.
