I left Bothell at 5:30 this morning with wind, fog and rain setting the stage. I needed to be in Portland by 3 to pick up my daughter and I thought this hike would fit right in.
It took exactly 90 minutes to get to the trailhead from exit 21 off of I-5, 4.25 hours altogether.
The trailhead is in the day use area of the Lower Falls Rec Area campground. The place was empty and It really felt like I found "the middle of nowhere". As soon as you get out of the car you can hear the falls. Really beautiful! Much bigger than the pictures make them look.
The trail is in great shape. The tread is super smooth and very gentle. This trail would be perfect for for kids, grandparents, or people recovering from injuries. On this drizzly day the trail was free of mud and puddles.
There were loads of mushrooms. All shapes and sizes, shiny from the rain.
When I returned to my car I decided to circle round the campground. I noticed many of the sites were reserved for the weekend. I found the ranger preparing the facilities for campers. (Btw-cleanest pit toilets I've ever seen) He said the place is like lake chelan in the summer, packed with families and cars lining the street. Hard to believe on this quiet Friday morning.
I made it to Portland right on schedule. Can't wait to find more hikes along the south half of I-5.
