We took our 21 mo to the Mima Mounds for wildflower viewing! Lots of camas in bloom, as well as rosy plectritis, paintbrush, purple violets, lomatium, western buttercup, and blue-eyed mary. We visited on a Tuesday to avoid hearing the gun range, based on a previous trip report. Unfortunately, we did hear a little shooting, but not too bad. Overall a lovely day at the mounds!

I had heard about the Mima Mounds before visiting the area and had to check things out! This was a lovely little walk through an interesting prairie. I walked the full south loop (2.8 miles total, 1hr) and got to see tons of buttercups, shooting star flowers, and violets. Lots of bird song happening as well.

Be aware, this is right next to the shooting range and not super quiet. Once you get farther into the south loop the sound does dissipate a bit though at least.

When I arrived, 2 school busses were getting loaded and heading back to school. What a great spot for a field trip! Vault toilets are clean and stocked and there’s a hand washing station with soap & water. With all the activity I forgot to put my Discover Pass in the window. Naturally, I remembered this when I was at the far end of the property. Fortunately, I just got a warning. It would be a bummer to get a $99 ticket!
I knew I’d be too early for the Camas show but thought I’d see what early flowers show up on the mounds. The start of the trail is mostly buttercups and strawberry blossoms with occasional purple violets.
As you head south the shooting stars start to present themselves. It’s tempting to step into the grass for a picture but it’s not just grass. Millions and millions of camas leaves are shooting up through the grass. Not many buds yet. There’s nowhere to step on the grass without stomping future flowers. Don’t worry, no need to step off the trail. The further you go, the more flowers there are. I’ve never seen so many shooting stars!
The shooting range is annoying but I live near one so I’m pretty good at tuning it out. I saw bald eagles, harriers, meadowlarks and a flock of geese overhead.
Come now if you want to see a bunch of shooting stars. Come back in May if you want to see the camas bloom.
Signs say the gate closes at 4pm.

Short English Version:
-Pavement Trail accessible for Wheelchair
-No obstacles on trails.
-Observation Deck has hole. Please be careful of foot.
-Many gunshots made hike very stressful.

Interesting area, head for the south loop to avoid the constant gunfire- once you get south of the interpretive center and overlook it fades and you can hear the birds and enjoy the silence. No clue why dogs are forbidden but they are, lots of coyote scat on the trails though.
