It may be a shorter hike, but it's a mean one. Go in the morning so you'll have the trail mostly to yourself and won't be a nuisance to others when you collapse at the top of every switchback. This is a great trail to find out if you and your romantic partner are really committed to one another, and can stick out each other's grumbling. If you make it to the top and haven't broken up, congratulations! You will be rewarded with a beautiful setting in which to propose. Mt. Constance is near and clear; you can see Quilcene down in the valley, and beyond up to Strait of Juan de Fuca. If visibility is good, you can even see Mt. Baker. If you head down the road to the south viewpoint, you'll look across the Dabob Peninsula and Hood Canal to Kitsap and beyond—on a good day, you can see Mt. Rainier.
We met a gentleman today who said that he likes to hike this one to get him ready for anything else. When you get to the top, you'll scowl inwardly at any able-bodied younger folks who drove their car up the road, and feel the smug satisfaction that you really earned those views.
