Navaho Pass — May. 1, 1998

Our goal was Navaho Pass. My hiking journal showed that on April 24, 1992, there was now snow until 4,800 feet on this trail. This year was different- we were on patches of snow from about 3,300 feet and it became continuous at 4,000 feet. The depth is about 2 to 3 feet in most places. The trail has been reconstructed near the beginning and that section is in good shape. We came across two blow-downs that are easily crossed but one creek crossing near the 2-mile mark is fairly significant to negotiate especially with the high runoff from the recent warm weather. And speaking of the weather- while Puget sound was socked-in after a week of beautiful sunny days, we found the sun shining bright on the ""dry side"". Our trip ended at the junction with Standup Creek trail (#1369). Both Robin and I are breaking-in new boots and this was all we wanted to push things on the slushy snow surface. We performed our usual trail maintenance while enroute and enjoyed the bug free environment. The roads are in good shape and we had to push through a small snow patch to enter the parking area. That should be melted by next weekend.
