Beware of: snow conditions

I hiked up Rattlesnake Ledge last Saturday around 11:00 am. Icy conditions started about 1/4 mile below the first ledge and the side trail up to the first ledge was slippery. It was crowded at the first ledge (about 20 people), so I hiked up higher. It was all snow and ice above the first ledge. Be careful on the side trail out to the second ledge. The side trail to the third ledge was the easiest. Beyond the third ledge there were very few tracks. I walked in 1 - 2 feet of snow about 1 mile up beyond the third ledge to where there were good views of Rainier. I had on yak trax pros and had no problems with slipping in the snow and ice. It would have been a challenge without any traction.

I wanted to see what the ledge looks like after a fresh snowfall, and the recent snowstorm provided the right opportunity. The "snow conditions" status bar doesn't offer a suitable description, so let me just say the whole place was covered under several inches of fresh powder with the trail itself mostly compact snow, and about a foot of snow at the ledge itself. Not much had frozen yet so climbing up the trail wasn't too difficult, although getting back down was a bit dicey. I had good shoes on but no traction devices at all, not even poles. The views at the top were absolutely gorgeous, especially with the low clouds still hanging around and the sun occasionally filtering through. Somebody who was up there yesterday made a snowman on the ledge. I then ventured up to the second and third ledges as well, but they were mostly cloud-covered, which meant I quickly got cold and headed back down.

Sometimes getting the perfect photo is just a matter of being in the right place at the right time. I headed up to the Ledge just after Noon to check out the snow, and as I ascended the trail the fog parted ways just at the right time giving me this moment of surreal bliss.

Once at the top it turned out there was only a dusting of snow, and much of it had already melted. The nearby mountains all wore a white cap with a distinct line where the freezing level was.

There was a steady number of other hikers on the trail, but not enough to feel like it was ever busy. Pretty surprising for mid-day on a holiday weekend.

Beware of: snow, trail conditions

The weather report said rain but today was overcast with sunbreaks and beautiful - which proves once again to just go for it and if you get wet so what? We did the entire traverse of Rattlesnake Mountain from the lake to the winery, about 12 miles in 6 hours. The trail up to the ledges is clear, snow free, and easy. From the third ledge to the log jam we encountered snow on the thick salal brush. It is heavy wet snow that soaks your legs but is not deep. We donned gaiters at the log jam and good thing. Snow from there to the quarry is up to 8 inches and from there to the east tower gets up to 14 inches. Snow is thick and wet with an annoying crust just under the surface too thin to hold you but thick enough to grab your feet. Still thick but less crusty snow all the way to Panorama Point. Back down the west end of the trail is muddy and shows lots of blowdown. Crews on the scene were clearing trail and digging drainage so the trail itself is clear but not very asthetic. Good hike today but it will become very messy when all the snow begins to melt.

My friend and I took advantage of a bluebird March day to hike the the ledge and beyond to East Peak. No snow except for small bits here and there in places perpetually covered by the shade. None speak of on the actual trail.
