Spoon Creek Falls — Apr. 15, 2016

Olympic Peninsula > Olympia

A magnificent waterfall! The water is low enough to get to the pool without needing to get your feet wet (I brought water shoes just in case). Trial was short enough but some might consider its steepness a challenge, regardless the reward is well worth it. Plenty of room to sit around and watch the water endlessly flow down the 60-70ft drop. Was very quiet too didn’t see any other cars around the whole Wynoochee area. What a curious expression of gravity and matter - how curious more an expression our ability to perceive and reflect upon it. DISCLAIMER: I would not recommend coming along the way I drove, it can be much more easily accessed coming in from Wynoochee Lake. I spent the morning at Spider Lake #879, 15 miles to the northeast, then headed up FS-23 westerly. This road is very rough in places and I was not expecting it to be such. It took me 1.5 hours to traverse the 15 mile road. Be ready for sharp rocks and landslide debris in the road at times, large potholes, narrow and steep switchbacks, runoff streams in the road, and a few blow downs. I was able to do it in a Subaru Forester but was worried at times, but overall the road was passable and intersections well marked (and a few nice views and some waterfalls).

The first time I hiked this waterfall was in the spring run off season. The river was swollen and I didn't have the equipment for treading in the water even if it had been safe. So I only got a glimpse of the falls from the view point which is becoming overgrown with trees. You could still see the falls but it was hard to get a good photo. I decided to go back and visit equipped with water shoes and attempt to get a better picture. The trail down to the falls is not to bad. Some roots and rocks to look out for but with the switchbacks it isn't to steep or difficult. Once down to the river, to get a look at the falls you may have to go into the river to get around the bend in the river. I went in late September and we hadn't had any rain in August or September. The river bed was fairly low and easy to navigate. The falls was definitely at low flow. I added a picture from my spring trip just to have a comparison of the difference the season can make.

Although it is a long drive in to find the Spoon Creek Falls trail head, it is well worth it. The trail itself was easy to follow and very well maintained. We were able to go down to the creek bed and hardly even get our feet wet to see the waterfall in all its glory. What a gorgeous sight!
