Wow, they have obviously been doing a lot of work on this trail! Totally smooth, wide, plenty of room for people on bikes and hikers and more. We didn't hike the full Spruce Railroad Trail - just the part to Devil's Punchbowl. When you get to the new tunnel, take the small trail to the left instead of walking through the tunnel to get to Devil's Punchbowl. It was beautiful, but pretty busy. The color of Lake Crescent's waters is stunning!

To escape the smoke and heat in Seattle, my dog and I took 4 days out on the Peninsula, camping and swimming and doing short day hikes (Rialto Beach/Hole in the Wall) and Spruce Railroad. The best thing about Spruce Railroad is the swimming hole from the bridge, about a mile in, just after you reach the tunnel. Divine swimming there, and for my dog, about 500 yards shy of the tunnel there's a path off to a granite beach with easy lake access. That first mile of the hike though is an industrial-strength gravel road-- not too pleasant for hiking or riding, but it's better after the tunnel. Another great swimming hole: At Klahowya Campground, further on the road towards Forks, in the Sol Duc River. It was still hazy out on the Peninsula, but cooler and not so smoky.

This trail is opened to bikes and hikers ! It was a pretty hazy day for us but the trail was wide open - the best part is a swimming hole that you access by taking the small trail on the side of the tunnel (devils punchbowl)!

Hiked from the eastern trailhead to Punchbowl and about a mile further this evening before sunset. Bugs weren't to bad until the last half mile of the first half before we turned back. Smoke from BC wildfires hampered views but didn't seem to bother our breathing. One complaint is the amount of trash other hikers had left along the trail... pack it out people (particularly your dog poop bags)!!

Lovely trail for a hot day.  Mostly shaded but with views of Lake Crescent.  Trail starts out on what used to be a road but soon becomes a more conventional hiking trail.  So happy that this trail was created from an old train track.  Perfect for any families and any hiker or runner.
