Hiked this trail a couple times. It's a hidden gem in Tacoma for a quick hike and the trail itself doesn't get much traffic. It's a pretty easy hike with only about 300 ft of elevation gain, mostly toward the end of the trail. For being in the city, it's quiet and secluded and has a good variety of trees and foliage that get fairly dense in some parts. The trail is fairly narrow in spots and has some steep edges at a few points. I recommend a trekking pole(s) to help with these spots. It can also get muddy after rain. Coming in from the Pioneer Way parking lot is best as you can see Swan Creek right away about 200 ft from the parking lot and spend some time walking on the rock islands in the creek. This area is where most of the crowds stay and if you keep hiking past the wooden bridge that crosses the creek, then the trail quickly narrows and gets more secluded and less populated. Best part of the hike is that you can always hear the creek waters running which is peaceful. Also, you usually have the trail to yourself. After hiking up from Pioneer Way, you can return on the same route back or take an easier trail that runs parallel to the main trail but runs higher up on the ridge where its more level (no steep drop offs or elevation change). This trail then intersects back with main trail at several points closer to the Pioneer Way trailhead. Just be careful on this upper trail because it's shared by dirt bikers who aren't looking out for hikers. Overall, it's a nice trail for being within the city limits and makes for an easy day hike when you can't make the +1 hour drive to the I-90 corridor or elsewhere.
