Left Rock Creek campground on Bike and headed up L1200 to Grouse Vista. Road is in good shape. Made it up Larch Mt trail about a mile then hit snow. Same with trail up to Pyramid rock. Noticed camping litter around Trail head and Tarbell trail sign still shot up.

Beware of: snow conditions

Did the 11 mile out and back from the Grouse Vista Trailhead to Hidden Falls. There was a pretty severe storm earlier that morning so the trail had quite a bit of blowdown. I removed what I could as I was hiking. The trail is in pretty good shape overall. There are a couple of spots where water is overflowing the trail, and one spot where runoff follows the trail for about 200 yards but that's to be expected this time of year. There was a bit of snow at the beginning of the descent to the falls. I was able to make the hike in 5 1/2 hours.

Drove up to the Grouse Vista Trailhead near Battle Ground with my son to do a Spring litter pickup. The road from the Rock Creek Campground to the trailhead was in good shape. No snow to speak of on the road or at the trailhead. Overall, The trailhead was in pretty decent shape. We picked up about a bag's worth of litter, including beer cans and lots of empty shotgun shells and brass. The Tarbell Trail trail marker leading to Larch Mountain had been shot up pretty badly and needs replacing.

This hike was a workout from the get go! However, it was well worth the effort as I was able to view Mt. St. Helens, Mt. Rainier, Mt. Adams, and Mt. Hood! Views are visible from the top of Silver Star Mountain. As I made my way up, I saw Grouse Vista, Pyramid Rock, Sturgeon Rock, and Kloochman Butte. Wildflowers were in bloom everywhere I looked, it was beautiful! I took a side trip up to Grouse Vista and scrambled to the top, sat down and ate lunch before heading on to Silver Star Mountain. On the way up, I had the trail pretty much to myself! On the way down, I visited with several hikers on their way up. The next time I go to Silver Star, I will hike Ed's Trail. Also saw several snakes on the trail. All in all, it was an epic hike even though the clouds started to roll in as I crested Silver Star Mountain. I would only recommend this route for hikers in good shape. There were a few issues with the trail such as a couple of blowdowns and some snow around the 4000 ft. level. Also saw a couple of areas where there was water on the trail. All those issues were minor and I had no problems hiking around them. The main problem that I saw with this route was the huge rocks in the trail most of the way up. It made it even more difficult on the way down, so please be advised of your footing. Bottomline, anyway you hike up to Silver Star Mountain is well worth the effort! The views are incredible!

We hiked from Grouse Creek Vista trailhead west on Tarbell Trail to Larch Mtn. The trail was >90% snow-covered (6-8' deep), though it was easy walking. The views to the south (Mt Hood) and the north (Mt St Helens) were wonderful, as the sky was totally clear. From the jeep road west of the top of Larch Mtn (marked by the cell phone towers), you have a wonderful, 90% view of the Columbia valley.
