Snowfields to cross - could be difficult

Our Mountaineers group of 5 met up at the overflow parking area near the Staircase Ranger Station at 8:30, and our five cars were the only ones in the lot. There's been recent treefall along the gravel road leading up to Staircase, and there was signage and a crew as we left to tidy things up. The gravel road to/from the trailhead is potholed, but passable with patience.

We started at Staircase Rapids, then made our way in steady sprinkles across the suspension bridge onto the main trail. There were a couple of minor blowdowns, easy to step over, but lots of standing water and mud -- waterproof boots and gaiters are in order. The snow was spotty up to Spike Camp, then a solid 18-24" deep in spots. Our planned destination was Camp Pleasant, but after a few sloppy steps in the snowpack, I turned the group around about a half-mile after Spike Camp. Soaked and cold, we made a beeline back to the cars. We saw just three dayhikers on our return.

Hike #6 of 52 in 2021.
