Sourdough Ridge, Shadow Lake - Sunrise Camp Loop — Sunday, Jul. 11, 2021

Mount Rainier Area > NE - Sunrise/White River

A Sunday hike from Sunrise Visitor Center on Sourdough Ridge to Frozen Lake was beautiful, snow free, and very crowded with happy hikers.  It is getting dry and dusty, in a dramatic change from a couple of weeks ago, after the heat wave. At Frozen Lake, it looked like 10-15 percent of hikers continued on to Fremont Lookout or the Burroughs. Snow free either way. The trail down to and around Shadow Lake offers relief from sun and crowds, and the chance to see meadows in full wildflower bloom near Shadow Lake.  There are two remaining snow patches to cross shortly after the start of the descent to Shadow Lake. Good boots and poles will help. But melting rapidly.
