Ladder Creek Falls — Sunday, Oct. 3, 2021

North Cascades

We stopped by this trail as a brief leg stretcher during a long drive, and it was so perfect.

Right now is a great time to visit because there are fall colors AND to my delight, you can see many salmon in the river, and even a few in the side stream.

We walked across the pedestrian only bridge (which is open although it's a bit hard to tell from a distance) to start our trip. We quickly noticed a lot of fish jumping and surfacing and, as we looked more, saw that there were many in the waters below the bridge. It was wonderful to watch them. I was with my mom and my daughter, and we all were entranced. My daughter took my binoculars and I had a hard time prying them back from her.

There are some nice fall colors in the little garden section right across the bridge. Be sure to stop here to look at the map. It'll help orient you. Beware, however, that the upper reaches of the trail are closed. A tree fell across the top bridge. but you can still get a really nice view of the falls. The trail kind of naturally lead you to make a loop back, and you'll cross over the car/pedestrian bridge, which you can also see salmon from.

I know there used to be a light show on the falls at night during the summer. Not sure if that's still going on, but if it is, I'm definitely going to plan to go see it next summer. It's really fun.
