Trip Report

High Hut Snowshoe — Saturday, Jan. 15, 2022

Mount Rainier Area

Road to lower lot is clear of snow and in good condition; the gate is closed so it's not possible to park any higher up.  Arrived at parking lot by 9am and only half full (full at 1:30p when we returned to our car, so we appreciated "arrive early" advice from other WTA posts).  Scattered snow and mud for the first 0.5mi, then snow the entire way up thereafter.  Snow was packed and hard at first and many hikers were opting for microspikes.  Later on in the day, especially in the sunnier parts of the trail, softened snow made snowshoes preferable to keep from post-holing and to keep up our speed.  GPS calculated distance at 4.3 miles from gate at the lower lot to High Hut (8.6mi roundtrip).  Hut is locked up due to pandemic, but the first door to the mudroom is open if the weather turns quickly.
