Fort Flagler State Park — Friday, Feb. 25, 2022

Olympic Peninsula > Hood Canal
The beach and Port Townsend

A lowland hike, but it feels far, far away from Seattle.  I parked in the huge lot at NW Spit, hiked the beach east to Marrowstone Point, then hiked the Bluff Trail back west to the parking lot, about 6 miles total.

Puget Sound is famed for it's cobble beaches, which often make for miserably rough walking.  Not so, here!  This beach is lovely, glorious sand.  That sand is continually replenished from the bluffs above.  Also, the beach is hikeable  on all but the highest tides.  Views of Port Townsend, Mt. Baker and much more.

The walk back on the Bluff Trail takes you past numerous old gun emplacements, built to repel a Spanish invasion force that never arrived.  These fascinating structures are in good repair and are open for your exploration.  Be advised, though, that the emplacements have deep pits, often without guardrails, and concrete is very unforgiving should you fall.  If you have young children who tend to run wild, this is probably not the place to bring them.

The beach, views, and historical military structures make this place unique.  Highly recommended.
