We opted for Monte Cristo after our original plan fell through. Limited parking at Barlow Pass as the lot at the trailhead is still under snow.
This recent winter took a toll on this trail. Many new downed trees, the river reclaiming parts of the trail, and lingering snow. Nothing impassable, though.
The usual log crossing over the river is a bit more tricky now with many fallen logs teetering over your bridge. Look for the orange ribbons to help you find your way across the log bridge.
After the river crossing, slushy snow begins and is continuous for about one mile. After that, the snow is intermittent until you reach Monte Cristo where the town is under about two feet of snow. The snow is not difficult to traverse, but it will feel like a bit of a slog and will add a level of difficulty to this normally gentle jaunt.
Minimum recommended equipment: waterproof boots, gaiters, and a change of socks. Spikes and snowshoes not needed, but poles were helpful in the snow.
Overall, we had a wonderful day! Always a good reminder that even though the weather on the westside may be nice, conditions in the mountains can wildly vary.
