Went on a mid-week overnight backpacking trip on Tubal Cain to Buckhorn Lake on Wed-Thursday with our two pups. We showed up mid-day, and the parking lot had ample space, with several spots left. The trail was nice, without a lot of loose rocks or roots to trip you up. The elevation was gradual and hardly noticed. The pups were happy about the multiple water sources (creeks and river) along the way. The hike was pretty lined with rhododendrons in the beginning of the hike, followed by new growth forests. The spectacular views don't happen until you are much closer to Buckhorn Lake, walking along the ridge surrounded by mountains. The lake itself is small, buggy, and underwhelming, and there are few camping spots nearby. This route is likely better for a long day hike, and I wouldn't recommend for others for backpacking. Still, we had a great time.
