Starting at the North Trailhead, there is a place to self report/issue a free permit. I did this to help with any stats that are used to maintain the trail.
The trail climbs pretty steep until about the 6th switchback to about the cutoff to the Lakes. We continued on picking huckleberries that were everywhere. Hiking out of the clouds into the sunshine helped spur us on around the first ridge. There is a spur trail up to an unnamed summit, but we skipped it as our destination was Tatoosh Peak and the old lookout site. You can basically see the route to the lookout from that spur trail cutoff.
You lose a little elevation as you go around a bowl. And keep an eye out as you hit the south part of the ridge as there will be a faint trail leading quickly up to your left. Follow this up the ridgeline and there’s the summit!
We had great views and one guy in our group even strafed down to the small lake about 300 feet below the peak (not Tatoosh Lakes) for a swim.
Some overgrown places, but otherwise clear trail.
