Wonderland Trail — Sunday, Sep. 11, 2011

Mount Rainier Area
A couple friends and I did an out and back from Sunrise Park Road to Indian Bar Camp on the Wonderland Trail. First thing to note is that the park is super busy. Expect to wait to get in and parking is tough. The trail is in excellent condition and crowded at times. The trail was dry up to Summer Land. As you head to Panhandle Gap you encounter snow and run off on the trail. Wildflowers are everywhere and the views endless. Expect to see rivers, glaciers, flowers, marmots, and even possibly goats or a bear or two. We saw 14 goats hiking back to Panhandle Gap from Indian Bar Camp. Bears were sighted closer to Summer Land Camp. For the average day hiker going up to Summer Land is enough but if you like a bit more adventure keep going and the tread will become rockier and tougher. You'll cross snow fields, kick some steps, and get wet.
