Today we got above the fog by hiking the Alternate Incline Trail to the Oyster Dome. About 10 miles north of Burlington take the Alger Exit and head west following the signs to the Mt. Blanchard Trail System. (Mt. Blanchard is part of the Chuckanut Mts.) The approach road to the upper lot was in good shape and almost snow free on this day.
We parked at the upper trailhead and walked the gated road 1 mile to the beginning of the Incline Trail. These trails were in excellent shape for January with very little snow (or mud) to be found except for around Lizard and Lily Lakes. (see pic below)
Although most of Puget Sound was buried in fog we were above it and the "Inversion" had really kicked in on the Oyster Dome. People were eating lunch in short sleeve shirts and it felt like it was 60 degrees up there. Good views of many islands standing above the fog and the Olympics were clear as were Canadian Peaks to the North.
My favorite view was seeing Mt. Erie and Sugarloaf floating on the fog like ships at sea. (see pic below)
Estimate round trip distance at 7 miles and about 1,400' of elevation gain.
PS - After the hike we drove to the Samish Overlook and this road still had snow in places and was in poor shape.
