I chose to hike this trail uphill, as I had a ride arranged at the top, Hurricane Ridge. This trail starts at the Ranger complex on the Elwah, the road to which is inexplicably closed. The ONP website said it was open until 6 pm on Sunday, but it didn't say that was only for pedestrians. So I grumbled to an employee I happen to meet at the gate, and had to hike an extra mile or two to the actual trailhead. There's just some construction going on. The road actually should be open!!!
It starts right off being steep and never lets up until the end. The trail is in mediocre shape - a few blowdowns and a few overgrown areas, but not too bad. The first half is in forest and the second half is exposed. Bring a hat. The views on the top half are some of the best anywhere. You can see Olympus to the south and Victoria BC to the north. I was surprised how chilly it was on top after sweating all the way up on a sunny day.
