Central Cascades
The LARCHES oh my the LARCHES!! The drive up to the trailhead is stunning as you wind your way up in elevation through the golden zone of larches. The road had some large deep puddles that were frozen in the morning, but melted by the afternoon on the way down. There was maybe two inches of snow at the trailhead. Once we started walking along the ridge and dropping down in elevation out of the burn area the snow disappeared. In the first quarter mile from the trailhead the ruts from motorcycles are a little deep, but still very manageable to hike. The trail is currently closed to motorcycles for to protect elk calving season. The views along this trail were impressive in all directions. If you are interested in larches this is a great option.
