I haven't been able to get out to hike as much as I'd like lately, but I couldn't pass up my traditional new year's day hike at Coyote Wall.
The trailhead was packed when I arrived in the early afternoon with cars spilling out onto Courtney Rd. This hike is usually pretty busy on nice weekends and holidays, so it wasn't too surprising. The restroom is currently closed due to lack of federal funding (thanks, shutdown). Fortunately, this closure doesn't affect the trail!
The trail is in good shape and currently snow free. The portions of the trail on Old Ranch Road have some big puddles across the trail, but nothing completely blocking it. It's also worth noting that this trail is very popular among canine hikers, many of whom are off leash, and mountain bikers so be aware of your surroundings and be ready to share the trail.
By the time I'd hiked far enough to see over the wall, the sun was beginning to slowly set behind the ridge on the opposite side of the river, creating a stunning view and back light for Mt Hood.
