Took the kids and dog out to hike up to the falls on New Years Day. We arrived at 1pm to a pretty full parking lot (50+ vehicles). Took the trail up to the falls and back (skipped the lake trail this time). Trail was wet as expected, but did not have more than a few inches of water in any given spot. We did see a few people heading up to the falls, but most groups were heading back to the parking lot while we made the ascent. Ran into some snow cover and ice at the 1.5 mile mark. The stairs up to the falls as well as the immediate area around the falls had a good coat of ice on them. We did use poles throughout the hike, and they came in handy! Coming back down was a little slick until we hit the sign for Lake Serene. Skipped that part of the hike and headed back to the trailhead with no issues. Made it back to the parking lot around 4pm and saw less than 15 cars left. Great hike, very little traffic on the trail, and the falls were amazing. Highly recommend this hike for kids and dogs on leash.
