Trip Report

Deception Pass State Park - West Beach Sand Dunes, Deception Pass State Park - Headlands / Rosario Head / Lighthouse Point — Saturday, Apr. 27, 2019

Puget Sound and Islands > Whidbey Island

Spent the day at Deception Pass State Park. Started at Rosario Beach. Super crowded here. Spotted a couple garter snakes and flowers on the bluff. We had lunch in the picnic shelter at Bowman Bay then crossed the bridge in search of less crowds.

We started at North Beach where we saw a surf scoter diving in the water. Paused at Cranberry Lake to watch an eagle try to wrestle a fish away from an osprey. Took the Dune trail then back along the beach. Fun to spot a number of whales close to shore. Hardly any people along West Beach. Perfect to be there at low tide.

When we got back to Cranberry Lake there was more osprey activity. This time there were 4 doing an aerial show occasionally diving into the lake.

So nice that the wind died down and sun came out. We had to force ourselves to head home.

That lens is heavy! I’m building up my muscles while I learn to take pictures. Haha. Actually, those whales were very close to the shore. Maybe 50 feet past the last white created wave. Very special.

The series of pictures of the eagle and I osprey are fantastic. Looks like a great day!

Thank you. They flew over our heads for about 10 minutes. Encounters like that make my day!
