Northrup Canyon — Tuesday, May. 7, 2019

Central Washington
Looking back at Banks Lake.

Hiked the old wagon trail up the south side of Northrup Canyon on a lovely Tuesday in May, and had the place all to myself except for a few critters here and there. This trail is mostly at an easy grade and in partial shade during the morning until you get out in the sunshine up top. The creek on the canyon floor below is running nicely and can be heard now and then throughout the hike. Views of Banks Lake and of the old homestead in Northrup Canyon are possible near the top of this trail even though we puny humans can't see them as clearly as the Bald Eagles wheeling above the ridge. I did encounter a rattlesnake at a rock pile near the top of the trail--nothing like that dry buzzing sound a couple of feet from your ankle to make sure you're awake and watching your step. Yes, Ma'am--I was just leaving. Lots of arrow-leaf balsam root and lupine in bloom on the upper reaches of this trail, and I saw several turkey near the mouth of the canyon. Deer tracks and droppings are numerous. Really a lovely place, and worth taking care of.

Eagle over the ridge, old homestead to the right.
Purty, aren't they?

Hikin til I Drop on Northrup Canyon

Thanks--it was really fun seeing them. The juvenile in this pic seemed very curious, and I first spotted them because this one was peering around the rock spying on me.

Hikin til I Drop on Northrup Canyon

This is kind of a crappy point 'n shoot pic, the only camera I had handy--but if you look closely there's another juvie laying low and watching on the far left in the frame. May have to blow the pic up a bit to see the second set of eyeballs over there in the sticks and grass.

How fun to find curious turkeys! I never would have spotted that second one.
