BEWARE: There was an aggressive wolverine in the basin Friday morning. I arrived at the trailhead at 5:45am, 36 degrees. Made it to the basin by 7:30. Snow starts at about 1.5 miles in and consistent deep snow at 2 miles all the way to the basin. Found a large rock to sit on to enjoy the views. I spotted the wolverine on the glacier by the river. It eventually left the glacier for the snow covered meadow and passed within about 25 feet of me heading for the campsites...until he picked up my scent. He sniffed around a bit before he raised his head and saw me. He slowly moved toward me. As much as I wanted to take out my camera to get a picture of him I thought otherwise. Wolverines have been known to take down a moose. As he moved closer I was thinking how am I going to defend myself. At that point I got up on the rock and started yelling and banging my treking poles. I am sure it was my Bronx accent that finally convinced him to move on for he turned and headed for the woods. I believe a wolverine was spotted at Summerland and last year. I've encountered elk and bears on this trail, and now a wolverine. Made it back to the trail head by 11:30. What a great day for hiking.

Ah the Bronx accent. That may have scared the Wolverine but to a transplanted NYer that’s music to my ears. Great write up BTW.
