Trip Report

Goat Lake — Saturday, Jul. 16, 2022

North Cascades > Mountain Loop Highway

We arrived at the trailhead around 9:30 which was an hour later than we planned. Google maps sent us astray, so double check you have the right location! Our Outback was fine on the road but it may be more difficult with a lower clearance vehicle.

There's a small parking lot and there were quite a few cars already so we parked on the side of the road leading up to the TH. This is a popular trail so arriving early is a good idea. There is a toilet at the TH.

Very early into the hike, you can decide to use either the upper trail or lower trail to get to the lake. We opted for the upper trail which is a slow, fairly easy incline. It's a variety of packed gravel, rocks and dirt.

Around the 3 mile mark, the upper and lower trails rejoin and then the trail becomes a little steeper and rockier for a short bit. You'll also come across a large waterfall to the right of the trail. There isn't really a clearly marked trail to see the waterfall but you can climb over some trees and get a little bit of a view.

Continue up on the main trail for another half-mile or so you'll reach another junction with a sign pointing to the lake. Continue on the trail along the lake and grab a spot to take in the views and enjoy a snack.

On the way down, we used the lower trail which has more up-and-down terrain versus the steady incline of the upper trail. The views are better on the lower trail, as it follows along the river.

We were back at the trailhead a little after 2:00. We spent about 45 minutes hanging out at the lake so all together we were on the trail for about 5 hours.
