North Cascades
WTF is this all about

WTF? Sign at the TH kiosk says they FS is going to start charging an extra 5$ for parking here! I thought that was covered in the Forest Pass! AND how exactly are they going to collect it? Putting a metal collection box will basically just give the MLH tweakers something to break into along with your car. Anyway...the trail is a good level one for non hikers, out of town company and small kids. Sadly, the gravel ADA section is overgrown in spots and could use a good weed whacking. It would be hard to get a wheelchair thru parts of it. Right now, the trail itself is...meh. This is probably the worst time of year to be on it for scenery, the big trees are impressive, but the hot summer has taken a toll on just about everything else growing, brown moss, crinkled maple leaves and brown bracken. Come here after the first good rain for mushrooms maybe or early summer for hucks and wildflowers. The picnic tables are a nice place to eat lunch if scenic driving the Mountain Loop, several groups were enjoying them today. Loo open and in good shape.

WTF @ TH via NF indeed. Not a good trend. Thanks for the notice and information.

I'd rather see them just raise the Forest Pass instead of this, what a PITA this will be

WTA says no pass needed. $5 is the cost for the Forest Pass. I wonder if they just mean they’ll start requiring it?

Which trailhead did you park at? I think there are two, one at the north end of the trail and one near the ADA trail entrance. One of them might not currently require a pass, so I think the sign is basically asking for feedback about requiring a pass at THAT trailhead. $5 dollars a day is the typical rate for areas that normally require a Forest Service pass to be displayed, so I think that as long as you have a pass, you'll probably be OK and nothave to pay an extra $5 to park there.

We parked at the TH with the picnic tables and loo. There's no sign there about needing a pass, but I've always put mine out anyway. I wonder why the FS wouldn't just say something along the lines of, in the future a Forest Pass will be needed and give a date. Makes sense that since they have tables and loo they would want a pass.

I think all ADA parking should be free, and most folks already have a FS pass, so how much revenue would this actually generate? Enough to buy a pair of needed clippers? They're losing a lot more money from people parking along the road for free at Lake 22.

The interagency pass (known as the golden geezer pass by those of us who are in that demographic) I think is free for handicapped people and veterans. That covers any federal lands and can be used in place of a forest pass.

Even if people are parking on the road for Lake 22, they are still supposed to have a pass. A pass is needed within a 1/4 mile of the TH

The NWF pass DOES cover the 5$ fee, you do not need to have a pass and pay 5$. You only need to pay the 5$ in the drop box if you do NOT have a pass.

From the comments it sounds like what is going to happen is that this area will require a Forest Pass. Why they didn't just say a forest pass or a daily fee of 5$ will be required starting on such and such a date I don't know.
