Starting at the closed gate, we hiked up the Deer Park Road. The road was relatively snow free for 6 miles. At that point, we put on our snow shoes and trudged 2.8 miles along the snow covered road past the campground all the way to the top of Blue Mountain. Total roundtrip distance 17.6 miles, elevation gain 4,000 feet.
Cold, hand warmers a must. Total solitude the entire day. Beautiful views and peacefulness, especially beyond the 7 mile mark.
We saw several groups of varied thrush. And one red-breasted nuthatch along the road.
