Trip Report

Robinson Canyon - Ainsley Canyon — Thursday, Oct. 19, 2023

Central Washington > Yakima

Mid to upper 70s in mid October? Give me more.

I'll post four snapshots to give you an idea of the foliage status -- as you can see, it's the right time to go. One drawback: it's high hunting season. Good news: the hunters are friendly folks, and according to a retired CWU prof I met at the trailhead as he was going home, there are no deer to be found, let alone elk. At least not in the area between the two canyons--the L.T. Murray Wildlife area has lots of other space that I didn't cover. I didn't hear a shot fired the entire day.

One other comment: if you read trip reports from others who have visited this same spot, you'll see a lot of statements about confusion in directions and descriptions of the area. Mytho-Man's report is an exception, he wrote with his usual clarity.

But I promise, if you're worried about getting lost, you'll have to work really hard to achieve that. Turn off your apps, put your phone in your pocket, just stay on the main lower Robinson Canyon trail to begin with, and turn left 90 degrees when you see that you have two options for crossing the dry creek bed (about 10-15 minutes after starting your hike). Follow that trail until it opens up to broader vistas, find an abandoned road or faint trail that goes to the right (there are several), up to a ridge that's on the south/west side of Robinson Canyon, and get a lay of the land. Then go wandering here and there. If you go on one of the many side trails that peter out, just turn around and go back. The main roads through the area are never far away.
