Beware of: road, trail conditions

I love this trail and they had no sign in front that said the trail was closed. So I took my chance and drove down the road and made it halfway until I saw two logging trucks completely blocking the road.So I had to back up and turn around.

This is one of my favorite hikes. I can't believe they've closed this trail for 3 years now for logging. I tried calling, and they shuffled me around departments. And I believe the nature conservation is responsible for this trail. The guy actually emailed me back and said he thinks this is the last year that the road will be closed. Let's keep our fingers crossed and hope he wasn't just making it up to calm me down.

They've been closing it during the best time when the snow melts and it is open during the winter, but very difficult to navigate without the proper experience and equipment.

Road closed for logging operations. Looks like they are thinning out the forest.

The road up was snow free until about the last mile. There's been quite a bit of blow down across the road but all of it has been cleared mostly out of the way - just a few larger branches to maneuver around. There was an occasional pot hole here and there but otherwise pretty good condition. There were a few fresh vehicle tracks in the snow but they ended part way up and we were the only ones at the trailhead all day.

We started hiking just before noon. The trail started with a bunch of mud and a creek running down the middle of it. By about half a mile in, we were up to about a foot of fresh snow on the trail, so we switched to snowshoes. By 3/4 of a mile we reached the creek crossing and were walking on several feet of snow. It was quiet and beautiful at the field by the creek crossing. We didn't see an easy way across the creek that was flowing pretty good, so we decided to make it a short hike and head back.

Good amount of snow on the road but we were able to drive to the trailhead. Saw some shooters along Mallardy road, but otherwise we were the only hikers on the trail.

The initial slope at the start of the trail was easy enough to go up, although a little trickier to come down. We didn't need traction spikes, but I imagine you will in colder weather, as there is water running over the start of the trail. Trail is completely covered in snow so it's slow going. Saw some bear tracks in the snow along the trail and plenty of other prints.

This was our first time out on this trail so we were unfamiliar with the route, and didn't make much distance. We made it to the large boulder and completely lost the trail in the snow. There was lots of snow fall from the trees and critter activity so it was hard to tell where the trail should be. Wasn't sure if we had to cross the stream at that point, or if there were some switch backs we were missing. Ultimately the terrain was too rough to try to navigate with snow cover, so we had to turn back. Hopefully the tracks we left don't lead anyone astray.
