WTA's hiking guide is the most comprehensive database of hikes in Washington, and comprises content written by local hiking experts and user submitted information. All data is vetted by WTA staff. This resource is made possible by the donations of WTA members.

This is a lovely little trail tucked behind the North Cascades Visitor Center outside of Newhalem. Learn about the area by exploring inside the Visitor Center, and then see some of the natural wonders for yourself by wandering down the River Loop Trail to the Skagit River.

Ruby Mountain is a 7408 foot peak in the center of the North Cascades. It has one of the best panoramic views of the lakes, snow-capped peaks and glaciers of the North Cascades National Park.

A popular trail with great views of the Sauk and Skagit river valleys, Cascade mountain peaks, and on a good clear day, the Olympics and San Juan Islands. There will also be plenty of wildflowers to please photographers and hiking plant nerds alike.

You’ve done Sauk Mountain and marveled at the fabulous views, now hike down to the delightful little lake you see from the top! The trail is a bit rough and overgrown, but the lake is a quiet alternative to the busy trail above.

This is a nice, quiet little forest hike, where the journey is half the destination. The lake is pond sized, and surrounded by large boulders. It is pretty in its own way, a still lake with nice reflections, yellow waterlilies and silvered logs floating on the surface. The clumps of grasses and moss growing on the floating logs create a mini ecosystem to observe up close.

An easy, short loop hike out of the Lone Fir campground. The first bit is paved before giving way to a dirt trail that follows Early Winters Creek. After a creek crossing (log bridge) it loops back to the campground.

A lengthy, pleasant hike through lodgepole pine and deciduous forest, past a lovely waterfall to Abernathy Pass.

Start with a pleasant walk along Bridge & Slate Creeks and then earn your way to the high country with a climb up to the miles of sloping meadows, flowered in July. Finish with a steep climb through the heather to larch fringed Copper Pass with its views to the east/west with scrambles to the north/south.

Take a walk in the forest on this trail as it climbs past a shallow lake and continues nearly to treeline at Twisp Pass. The upper half of the trail is flowered in summer and the power of avalanches is evident in the pick-up-sticks debris field shortly before Dagger Lake. At Twisp Pass in an intersection with many informal trails for further exploration.

The Hegg-Benson Trail, designed and constructed by Skagit Land Trust members and volunteers in 2009-2010, provides a short walk through mossy forest to a picturesque waterfall on Barr Creek in this lovely conservation area.

The views and beauty on this high come at a steep price. Literally. But those who can soldier through some brutal elevation gain are rewarded by expansive views of breathtaking peaks, and masses of wildflowers on a hike that borders two of Washington's most gorgeous wilderness areas.

With a trailhead accessible year round, Cow Heaven and views of the Skagit and Sauk River Valleys along with the majestic North Cascades are a promising paradise despite the challenge of a zigzag ascent spent mostly within the shelter of the forest.

This pleasant trail offers an almost level walk to a grassy forested lake set in the rocky basin beneath Cutthroat Peak. This is an easy hike in an area of rugged, steep country and one of the few that are suitable for small children. It is an especially pretty hike in the fall when the larch are turning golden.

Make a short and gradual climb through fields of flowers to a quaint two-tier waterfall. This easy early-season hike is most impressive after spring snowmelt when the creek and falls are swollen with turbulent water.

This hike along Baker Lake is a busy, popular trail in summer. It is a nice off season walk though, and is perfect on a crisp, clear winter day. With the leaves off the trees, views that aren't possible in summer emerge; the surrounding peaks and the mossy green silhouettes of the leafless maple trees cover the hillside. A bonus any time of year are the many creeks, quaint bridges, large old-growth trees and of course, Mount Baker as the main attraction.

Short but steep, this trail delivers excellent views of Mount Baker, Mount Shuksan, and Anderson Butte. Similar views can be had from the road to the trailhead, but taking this hike offers solitude--even a hiker’s high--from climbing steeply away from the road and into the mountains.

With an ominous name like Mudhole Lake, it would be easy to set low expectations for this destination. Don’t be fooled though. This infrequently-visited route provides a steep ascent on good trail with expansive views and good berries in season. After just a couple of miles, a hidden pond, nestled in among larches in a high mountain cirque, will be all yours.

Wheelchair accessible, this trail is paved to a lookout on a ledge overlooking Liberty Bell Mountain. This area is worth the trip from the west side, because of spectacular views, and the myriad hiking trails in the area.

Hike this easy leg stretcher while taking in the beautiful scenery of the North Cascades Highway. A good stop if you have a car full of restless children or you are showing off the area to visiting relatives. The views from the top are a big payoff for such a short hike.

A hidden gem revealed! The South Fork Cascade Trail was in the Mineral Park Fire of 2003, but recent efforts by WTA crews and other volunteer organizations have helped reopen a section of it, and continue to repair it.

Slide Lake is a short but remote hike that samples a rugged slice of the Glacier Peak Wilderness. Popular among anglers, the hour-long drive up the single lane logging road deters crowds and ensures relative solitude.
