Walked pretty much most of the Discovery Park trails early Sunday morning in fog.  We started over by the south end of the Hiram Chittenden Locks, (which remains closed to all but boaters due to covid,) and took the super secret pedestrian bridge over the railroad tracks up to the main eastern entrance.  All the parking lots remain closed at the park due to covid, but that wasn’t stopping many folks.  The place really was quite busy even early with all the neighborhoods around the area clogged with folks trying to find off site parking - some legally, some less so.  Honestly, it looked like a bit of a goat rodeo.. There are maintained porti-pottis at several locations in the park though it appears at least some of the permanent facilities remain closed.  Trails are generally in good shape, though the goofy cattywampus bridge on the north beach trail is even more tricky since you really don’t want to touch the grubby railings with covid concerns.

But the area is still beautiful, even with several thousand of your neighbors.  The views were different today due to the fog but still super cool.  It also caused a quiet “hush”, knocking down most noise.  Quite a bit of wildlife out - eagle, gulls, heron, even had a kingfisher sit still for a minute for us.  Might want to wait a bit to try this walk given the crowds and crazy parking situation.  Happy hiking -

Nice easy hike where you don't break a sweat. It helped that it was cloudy today. It must get crowded on a sunny day, saw a decent number of people, most were wearing masks or keeping distant. Restrooms were open inside the park but the visitor's center road is closed. The area reminds you of Victoria, BC in some places. There's a sandy area with real sand up on the bluff.

Parking lots, restrooms, and visitor's center all still closed. If driving, you must park outside and walk into the park. It now closes early at 9:30pm. Moderate amount of people for a sunny, warm Saturday. Most wore masks. The majority of people were on the beaches, bluffs or the trails leading to them. The wooded parts of the trail had fewer hikers if you are looking to keep your distance.

This was a good challenge for our 2.5yo toddler, about 3 mi round trip from the South parking lot (still closed, but you can park right outside on Emerson St). There is a good number of steps from the loop trail down to the beach. We had to carry him up the last few flights of steps, but he had a blast on the way down and exploring the beach. Trail has some narrow sections with lots of folks enjoying it, so best to bring a mask.
