Saturday, the mini dirtbags and I hiked the Hummocks Trail.
HAZARDS/CAUTIONS:
Mostly for little hikers, but there are a couple of washouts and large rocks along the trail that could be tripped over.
HIGHLIGHTS:
The trail is well-marked and has great views of Mt. Saint Helens. We did the hike clockwise, but I would recommend counter-clockwise if you'd like the volcano to be the reward, and it also means less elevation gain. I would say the trail is easy, possibly low-moderate dependent on your skill level. There was plenty of parking, minimal bugs, and overall a family-friendly adventure.

I went on a geology hike led by Jon Major, Scientist-in-Charge at the Cascade Volcanoes Observatory, to learn about how the hummocks were created during the 1980 eruption of Mount St. Helens.
The trail is in great shape and getting heavy use by hikers, especially on weekends, because it is now the end of the Spirit Lake Highway due to the washout between the trailhead and the Johnston Ridge Observatory.

Hummocks trail is in good condition with a couple of muddy spots remaining. The west side of the Hummocks Trail is a little overgrown. Boundary Trail has some erosion and narrow places around Loowit Viewpoint. After Johnston Ridge Observatory, the trail gets bushy.
