Beautiful day on top of Sauk Mountain. Sauk Mountain Forest Road is steep and long with lots of potholes so take your time. There was about 30 cars at the top at 9:30 AM. We barely beat the sun up to the ridge through all the switchbacks. Lots of people on the trail. This trail is steep in spots with some loose gravel so we slipped going down a couple of times. Go slow be safe and use hiking sticks. A 360 view on the top made it all worth the 1200 foot climb up to 5500 feet. Lots of wild flowers throughout. Sections of the trail are eroded quite a bite so it can be unsafe in spots so take your time and step on larger rocks when descending so you don't slip on the small loose rocks.
As always get out and see this beautiful and enjoy your hiking!!
Take Care,
Mike

This was our first time on Sauk, and it won't be the last! We went with friends who have this on their yearly repeat list, for good reason. Steady switchbacks take you up 95% of the way, at which point the trail branches off to allow for exploring up top. Blueberries along the trail are always a hit with us and our kids (ours are 9 and 11), and they loved seeing and hearing ptarmigans, marmots, pikas, and chipmunks. We could not get enough of the views. It was an overcast/misty day, but felt glorious. Every minute was a different view as the clouds came and went, settled and lifted, and offered varying vistas of some truly gorgeous landscape. The road up had the typical potholes. If you're worried about it, just park before the last bend and avoid the worst one, but it's passable, and quickly forgotten once you start hiking.

The flowers were gorgeous! I went at 2 pm on Thursday and had no problem finding a parking spot and not too many people on the trail. Excellent trail and for the record, I’d rather do 2 miles of switchbacks then try to do a streep climb. Hike was moderate in difficulty.
