Beware of: snow, trail conditions

The Hamma Hamma road is closed for repairs, so you have to detour at Hoodsport. The ranger station has maps of the route, and the folks there are quite friendly. Lena creek is dry at the first bridge, but water is flowing just above there. No snow at all at the lake. East fork of Lena creek is bone dry to about 2/3 of the way from the lake to the first bridge on the Brothers trail. Major blowout of the trail makes it necessary to hike the dry creek for a few hundred feet. Snow starts just a little bit shy of Base camp at 3,000 feet. Well consolidated and not much of it. There was absolutely nobody on the Brothers trail on friday. Spent the night at base camp, had the entire mountain to myself! Beautiful night! I had intended to go higher on Saturday, but my legs had other ideas. This is a steep trail, and it pretty much wore me out. Once I get a little more legs beneath me, I am definitely going to do this again. The hike up from the lake is absolutely gorgeous.

Road closure note: We drove from Seattle around the south end of Hood Canal, past Hoodsport to the FS Road 25 towards the Lena Lake trailhead. However, the road was officially closed 1 mile from Highway 101 and the detour was back through Hoodsport, 25 miles back down the road and then a long way on other forest service roads. In the interest of time, we opted for a hike along the Duckabush Trail, to the north, instead. There is no indication of when the road might re-open but if you know in advance at least you could cut off at Hoodsport. It looks like they are doing construction, we could have driven past the closed sign but wanted to respect the closure.

A wonderful afternoon hiking to Lower Lena Lake. The trail is in great shape with just a trace of snow at the lake. The water level at the lake is amazingly low for this time of year. It should be really interesting come this August. We took SR119 by Lake Cushman, then FS24, to 2480, and then onto FS25 to reach the trailhead; a fun drive. On the way out we took FS25 back to Hwy 101, FS25 is posted as “road closed”. There are no obstacles that will prevent you from reaching Hwy 101 other then the road closed sign.

Please note that the Hamma Hamma road is not open, so anyone who wants to go to lena Lake has to go by way of Hoodsport. It is a long way off the track if you are coming from the north (as we are), which is why we gave up and went to Dunkabush (see that trip report).
