Originally headed for
Deception Pass and Robin Lake, we whipped instead into the Cathedral Rock trailhead next door (what the heck) threw on the gear and headed out, bound for Peggy's Pond and Mt Daniels. The first problem is minor, no bridge over Cle Elum River. But what d'ya know, a conveniently placed log downstream serves as a temporary if slightly unstable while a new very solid looking structure is being built (the foundation was poured already). We ascended, passing Squaw Lake, to the saddle above Deep Lake. Trail is in good shape if somewhat damp and insect ridden. We found the unmarked cutoff trail to Peggy's Pond easily. Major snowcover is encountered shortly before the pond. The pond itself is still mostly iced over. And the bugs. Waves of black flies were followed by clouds of mosquitos, making even enjoying this beautiful area trying. We camped on a dry spot at bottom of the Daniel Glacier (mistake). Should have camped ON the glacier. Next morning we were dead tired from all the previous days bug slappin, ascended the glacier to the upper cirque below East Peak. Sat around and enjoyed the view. We decided aganist a further climb for the relative comfort of a hasty retreat trailing a cloud of flies and mosquitos as we headed back out stopping just long enough for a six pack and a soak in the cold bugless Cle Elum River.
