I could have crossed the stream at 1 mile, but Sadie dog was not quite up for it.  With a couple of walking poles you can get across the log bridge.  So we just wandered up the road a ways.  No bugs at all, which was nice.  And the new paved road to the trail is great.  Go enjoy!  A bobcat did make a move toward my dog at the trailhead, so keep Fido close by.

A couple of neighbor friends joined me in an old growth tree hunting adventure along the CCC trail.  We started at the Bessemer Road entrance and ended at the Cliff entrance with a 2 car shuttle.  The road is in good condition except for a few hundred yards of deep potholes just before the Cliffs trailhead.  The first unpaved section has now been partially paved. A small unpaved section here will eventually be paved in the summer after some of the cliff has been removed with dynamite.

The understory now is a perfect lush green.  Everything is covered with moss.  About 1/2 way up the Bessemer Rd there is nice grove of old Spruce trees.

Along the CCC Trail we did an off trail detour to an amazing old growth cedar forest remnant.  There are also nice trees to be seen closer to the trail and within a mile of the Cliffs trailhead.

RT 5.3 mi with 800 ft elevation gain.

(Note: Lost item between 1/2 to 1 mile uphill from the TH--yellow Amphipod water bottle with black pocket--contained expensive-to-replace Ford key fob!) Took my dog on a trail run from the Blowout Creek TH (on Middle Fork Road), past the closed blue gate, up Bessemer Rd (old logging road) uphill for about 1 mile, right (east) on the CCC Trail, then about 3 miles to where the trail intersects Middle Fork Road again. We then returned back the same way for a total of about 8 miles. Trail was pretty muddy in spots and there were several creek crossings where we could not avoid getting our feet soaked. (Note: I have usually found this to be the case with the CCC trail.) There were a few nice views off the ridge to the mountains across I-90. We saw one family on bikes on the trail itself and a few hikers, one with dogs, on Bessemer Road leading up to the trail. My husband and I searched Bessemer road thoroughly but did not find the water bottle/key fob. If anyone has collected the them to turn in to a lost and found dropoff point somewhere (or has any suggestions for a lost and found drop location), I'd be grateful to hear from you!

Hiked/ran this with my dog on a beautiful drizzly Saturday from the Blowout Creek TH (on the Bessemer Rd turnoff) about 3 miles to Brawling Creek and back. The Middle Fork road from the Mailbox Peak Trailhead has been completely repaved (it was really bad before). Parked at the Bessemer road turnoff about 6 miles down Middle Fork Rd, then walked a mile up the moderately steep grade of Bessemer Rd to the CCC trail junction. Turned left (west) at the junction and immediately there was a stream which I was not able to cross without wading ankle deep--the rocks were slippery and provided poor footing--a theme that continued on the several stream crossings between Blowout and Brawling Creeks. The trail had only mild ascents and descents, but the footing was fairly technical due to constant embedded rocks overlaid by slippery leaves. There were a few good views to the mountains on the south side of I-90, although they were mostly draped in clouds. Did not see a single other person.

This hike starts where the CCC Road Middle Section meets FS56 at 7.3 miles past the Mailbox Peak Trailhead, 2.3 miles beyond the Bessemer Road turnoff. There's a great parking area now on the left side adjacent to a new trailhead made from river rock. The CCC Road/trail offers lots of shade and a few peek-a-boo views along the way. A few creeks are crossed some of which would run high in Spring but are dry now. Old growth stumps and a few older trees still remain as well as ferns, flowers, and cliff faces. At a little over two miles near a 'Tall Mossy Cliff' enjoy views out to Russian Butte and the Pratt River Valley. We stopped there and ate our snacks and returned to the cars. Our Cub Scouts rated it a 6 but then after the hike we drove about a 1/4 mile back down the road to a small turnout on the left side by the river. Easy access gave way to a wide shallow part of the river that the kids and adults easily waded into to cool off. This pushed it up to a solid 8 and was welcomed relief from the temperature.
