We decided to head out to Rosario Head to get out of the house and beat the heat today. As usual, the access to the trail head is as easy as you will find anywhere. Paved roads up until the parking area and plenty of parking. Most of the people there when we arrived late in the morning appeared to be fishing and kayaking.
The trail is narrow but well marked. There are multiple beach access points along the trail, all of them clean and sandy. We followed the trail towards Lighthouse Point- saving Lottie Bay for another day. The trail is dry, but as usual there are a lot of roots and areas of exposed rock to navigate. In some areas the trail narrows and there is a steep drop to the beach and rocks below. Keep kids close and dogs leashed for safety.
We enjoyed the views and played on the beaches. The haze from the BC wildfires meant the views were not as good as they usually are, but there was still plenty to enjoy. Lots of wildflowers blooming and the salal bushes are heavy with berries- but not ripe yet.
There's always a lot of wildlife to enjoy here; today we found several jellyfish on the beach, innumerable crabs, and the usual assortment of barnacles, limpets, and snails. We spotted a bald eagle and had a Great Blue Heron fly low over our heads, plus any number of gulls, swallows, and miscellaneous sea birds.
The trails were not crowded. Almost every group we passed included young children. We saw a lot of dogs, but our pup was the only one actually on the trail- the rest we saw playing on the beach. If you do take your dog up the trail, leave the retractable leash at home and use a 4' or 6' leash- too many opportunities to run ahead and right off the edge of a cliff.
