Great day to roam around exploring the ruins of Fort Worden. If you haven't been here, let me say there is much to discover and enjoy for both kids and grown-ups. The star attractions of course are the gun batteries and mortar pits, their dark tunnels and passageways held in an eerie state of arrested decay. Along the way there is much signage, telling the story of these structures and the men who were part of their history. One could easily spend the entire day perusing these massive monuments and still be left with much to find. The park of course is not just rusting metal and crumbling concrete, there is also considerable sandy beach, trails, and wildlife. The local deer graze throughout, barely fazed by the humans milling about the park. We spent all day ambling our way through the park and I feel we still have much to see. I look very much forward to our next visit. Highly recommend Fort Worden, you won't be disappointed!

We took a nice trip from Seattle to Port Townsend. It was a beautiful day and we caught the ferry from Edmonds. We went explored the town first, visiting all of the shops, and grabbing some ice cream. We then made our way to the fort which was really neat. You can go all over the fort (it gets pretty dark so bring a flashlight). There is even a camping area right next to the fort. If you have a motorcycle, it would be a great day ride. Here is a video of our trip. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Yopge15DZLY&feature=share&list=UUtEU_hRxD6LBBH3V4YzidrA

It was cold and foggy but this is such an easy area to putter around in that we had a great time exploring the tunnels, etc. The ground was damp but not really wet so we had fun with our 2 dogs.

We visited Port Townsend on Sunday and started our day at Fort Worden. I hadn't been here for years and never realized there was a series of trails at the park. While exploring around the old buildings, we stumbled onto the series of trails near the beach. We didn't hike any appreciable distance but there were great views of the ocean to be had near the lighthouse. It appears there are many short loops near and around the beach. A Discover Pass is required to park anywhere in the park and there are ample signs to remind you of this fact. You can purchase one at the visitor center.
