Arrived around 10:30am and parking lot for Hamilton Mountain trailhead was full but found spaces at Hadley Trailhead located within the campground loop of the Beacon Rock State Park (Discover Pass Required). Trail conditions were good for the most part with exception to areas of soil loss and visible ruts near the narrow switchbacks. Beautiful waterfalls and incredible views of the Columbia River Gorge. At the summit you could see Mt. Adams and Mt. Hood. Wonderful day for a hike!

A lovely day for a lovely hike. Forecast was cloudy, but the sky was clear; great hiking temps mid 40s to low 50s. The trail is for the most part very smooth. 2100' gain over about 3 miles, nice easy grade. There are plenty of intermittent views on the way: the local region along the river, including the Bonneville Dam; views west down the river; Mt. Hood appearing and gradually growing as you gain elevation; looks back to Beacon Rock. Eventually your look back down includes a sizable open plateauish raised area. That is "Little Hamilton Mountain". Apart from some steep cut-through access, there is a unique clear (though unsigned) path off the main trail to reach it. If you are the hiker in the WTA photo for this hike (by Anne Boyd), seeing the iconic basalt cliff, turn around and you'll see the path to Little Hamilton forking off to the left. There are more nice (if by now familiar) views from Little Hamilton -- well worth a visit or lunch stop. Earlier in the hike is an exposed rocky area with views, also excellent for lunch. Reaching Mount Hamilton (a high spot in the trail, not really a summit), you are rewarded with a good view of Mount Adams and local stuff. Had some growth east of the trail been trimmed to keep the view? If so, thank you!
We enjoyed the two waterfalls, especially Pool of Winds -- very short spurs off the main trail. When we arrived at 10:30 a.m. on this lovely Saturday March 8, the lower lot was full. The upper lot had space. A pleasant ranger was doing his duty, ticketing cars -- if you didn't bring a Discover Pass, you can pay $10 cash at the upper lot, and I was told you can pay with credit card at the lower lot.
On this particular day, we did the quicker up and back rather than the loop, favoring the repeated river views and quicker time. On the way up, not too far from the start (but after intersecting the path from the camping area which passes "Little Beacon Rock"), you hit a trail intersection with a metal sign, where you keep right to Hamilton Mountain. The left path is the return path of the loop. The metal sign is badly faded and no longer shows your right path to Hamilton Mountain.
