Beware of: trail conditions

Little Mt. Si 12/27/04 It was foggy below and sunny on top of the little peak. On the way up we found a little mud but no other trail problems. This was my first time using the new Little Si trailhead. It has a nice parking lot and privy, and was nearly full at late morning on a Monday in Dec. The new section of trail built from this lot is gentler and nicer than the old route. We imagined trolls hiding behind the house sized boulders in the deep dark forest valley between big and little Si mountains. We watched several groups of serious rock climbers ascending the cliffs on little Si's west face. Weak sun rays filtered thru the fog and between the fir trunks on the last mile before we poked out into the sunshine just a few dozen yards from the top. The cloud bank covered the Snoqualmie valley with only the peaks, Si, Washington & Rattle- snake poking thru. About a dozen hikers shared the summit for lunch.. We were amused by a non stop talking 5 year old boy. It was all new and wonderful to him . This is a nice little hike for a short winter day. It was my annual date with a cute young woman (wife approved). She is a northwest native who has been away for a few years. Statistics: 5 miles 1100 ft. rise 1570 ft. high point 3.5 hours (including lunch and nature) 42 miles from my north Seattle home. Robert Michelson

Finally got out for a couple hours between the rain showers to climb Mt Si. When I got to North Bend and could only see half way up the mountain (low clouds) and snow, I decided to regroup and take the easier hike - Little Si. The trail is in pretty good condition and provides most of the great Washington trail experiences - Mud, Roots, Boulders, moss, trees, creek(only one to cross), some steepness, and of course, other hikers. Fortunately, the trail stair builders have not found the trail yet so it was actually very enjoyable. Views from the top and across the valley were limited because of the low clouds, but overall a great 2-hour round trip 'vacation'.

This close-in, popular hike was receiving a grooming of some new gravel thanks to some energetic college students today. Thanks, kids! It was a soft green spring day on the trail. Salmon berries are already beginning to ripen. There are only a few flowers on the route, but some interesting plants to note are the wind-stunted Lodgepole pine (Pinus contorta) on the rocky summit, as well as the manzanita shrubs. No one was attempting the rock wall or scramble routes today with the damp conditions. While not as long as Big Si, there is enough variety on the hike to allow for a nice workout. The trail is very popular with folks with dogs. The trail was in good condition, except for a few muddy or soft sections and one tree down over the trail (easy to get over or around). This was the first time I've gone over the new access route. It was interesting with some good views over the Middle Fork Valley. Enjoy!

Little Si is great in the mid-week! The new trailhead (just a 1/4 mile past the old spot) has lots of parking. Trail is in good shape -- it was a little wet and slippery on the rocks up top. About 10 people at the climbing wall. A few people and a few dogs on the trail (maybe saw 12 people tops).

This is a good trail if you want a hike that is quick and nearby. The weather was beautiful so of course everyone and their dog (literally) were on the trail. We got to the trailhead about 9 am so we avoided the crowds until the way back. The trail was in great shape and the views great from the top. The parking lot when we got back resembled a retail parking lot with cars waiting to park but that is the price you pay for hiking one of the I-90 standard hikes. I was disappointed because no dogs ran into my friend on the trail but there is always next time.
