Beware of: trail conditions

Lower South Fork: Great condition for the first 5 miles, big thanks to the WTA BCRT crew working this weekend regrading the trail and doing logout. Brushy after that, but trail was still visible. Lots of large trees over the river heading towards the Church Creek Shelter, but if you're not comfortable with log jam crossing this shouldn't be your first. Fallen tree blocking half the forest road 2361 to upper trailhead, but most cars should be able to drive around it.

Upper South Fork: Seems like this trail hasn't seen maintenance in a long time, but it was still easy to follow. Intermittent snow became permanent snow just after Tumble Creek about 2 miles in. No way to keep feet dry at the next river crossing, and with more snow on the other side, I opted to come back once it was snow free. If you're intent on crossing here, your best bet would be upstream at the widest part (see last pic), which was slower and more shallow than the divergent bits.

I was the first car in the lot at 6:50AM. Road in mostly paved, partial gravel, any car can make it. Pit toilet in good shape - miraculously bug free and stocked with TP. I was scoping this trail out for a potential future camping trip based off past camping trip reports however there is a sign at the trailhead saying no overnight camping. So I don't know if that's new or folks are just doing it anyways. Pretty chill trail, a few easy stream crossings, a few blowdowns but easy to get around. I only saw one other person the whole trip, towards then end (10:35).

It was a lovely hike today on the Lower South Fork Skokomish River Trail! Wildflowers were blooming and the old growth forest was majestic to see. One slight note of caution. The streams leading into the river are quite full, so there were a couple of spots that I had to think about before crossing. Completely doable, but one of the streams has a large log that people use to cross. I wasn't comfortable with that since it had some muddy patches, and I don't have the best balance, so I crossed a little further down the stream. The trail up to the bridge and waterfall is fine, however just passed that there are large trees across the trail. I turned around at that point so I can't speak to what lay beyond. When I started out this morning at 9:30, I only encountered one other couple on the trail. On my return trip later in the morning, I passed only four groups. All around delightful hike!

Thank you for the great directions to the trailhead. All the roads are well marked so the trailhead was easy to find. A few potholes on the road going in, but not a problem for most vehicles.

A great day for this hike, stayed about 60 degrees all day and saw maybe 4 other cars and a few small groups but not busy at all. Trillium and salmon berry are blooming and beautiful! The trail stays mostly in the woods away from the river so if you're looking for a trail that stays close to the river the whole time, this is not necessarily the trail you're looking for. I felt the forest kept changing scenery every couple miles and I enjoyed the many bridge crossings. Lots of huge spruce trees, some bigger then I've ever seen before. Felt very magestic and was very much at peace out there on that trail today.

I've been hiking this trail regularly for years, but today was probably the most gorgeous it's ever been. Perfect weather and a high, raging river with steady flow from pretty much every side stream, plus all of the ferns are still matted down from the last snow, so the all new trillium blooms stand even taller. And there are a lot - not sure if it's the improved visibility or what, but they seem way more prolific than usual. Bleeding hearts, yellow violets, and salmon berry are blossoming as well, with many more plants getting ready to flower any day now. Who knows when we'll get another warm, sunny day like this, but I'm glad I caught it.
Other stuff: road is fine, though the dirt section is a bit more pot-holed than usual so go slow. Trail is generally clear to Homestead and gets marginally worse until right before Comfort where there's a few blowdown messes, new to me since I was last out here in mid-February. That's as far as I went today, so just expect things to be more troublesome the further out you go and plan accordingly.
