Not your normal walk in the woods. Don't under estimate this hike. The trail is in great shape. No dead fall to climb over or anything else blocking the path. A bit of the trail does have the brush encroaching but nothing impassable. No snow on the tail. But even with the great conditions the hike is steep, easily on the same scale as Mt Si. The trail has a few good stopping points on the way up to rest, all of which I used. The summit is not as clearly marked as some other hikes, so keep your eyes peeled for the top. The day's weather was great for a hike, nice cool light breeze. Happy to catch a break in the clouds during my lunch at the summit. Great view of Lake Cushman from the top. Definitely recommend starting the hike early and easing into it over the day. Moving at a good pace total time up and down was 4 hrs 10 min, including stops and lunch.

This was boring for us. The river is nice though!

A challenging hike, but rewarding. We just returned from a day hike which took us with time for eating and shooting lots of photos, 6 hours, much longer than anticipated. The trail is straight up and then straight down so I found my trekking poles very helpful. It was only after getting home that I realized this 3,500 ft. elevation gain in 6.4 miles was greater than Mt. Si, which is 3,100 in 8 miles. It was a challenging first hike of the season. The view at the top made it worth it. The trail was in good shape and completely clear of snow. There were a few snow patches, but nothing to impede the hike. The wildflowers were out and fragrant. We were practically the only ones on the mountain, which made it a welcome change from more popular hikes like Mt. Si or Ellinor.

Beware of: snow conditions

Just moved into the Tacoma area about 3 weeks ago and have always heard about the amazing hiking to be had in the Olympics and Cascades. On monday morning me and a pair of friends had a coin flip between Mount Rose and Mirror Lake, and Rose came out on top, so we packed up the car and headed out to give Mount Rose a shot as our Virgin hike in Washington. Was very much worth the knee pounding we received. The trail was in very good condition all the way up to the trail split. We chose to head left up the 1.1 to the summit, hoping for a shorter hike than the 1.6 to the right. What we got was a very nice hike up through some streams and nice meadows and light snow covering the trail. It then turned pretty rough with a good bit snow and a steep trail following the orange trail markers. We finally broke out of the snow and back onto the trail for the last 300 feet or so to the summit which was dry. Weather was pretty nice a good bit of cloud cover but no rain so it made for a nice break at the summit as we rested our knees. We decided to make a loop out of it and follow the 1.6 back down the ridge line. The snow on this side was a bit more packed and made for a nice break on the knees. After about 500 feet or so of decent we came out of the snow and enjoyed a nice afternoon hike down to the car. Equipment, we had a daypack with some fresh socks and food and a sturdy pair of boots each, poles would have been nice to add for the downhill and poking through some of the deeper snow up high. Overall trail was in good condition and for my first hike in Washington I am super impressed and can't wait to get out on some more of what the Olympics have to offer

Beware of: snow conditions

My husband and I hiked this 2 weekends in a row. His recent knee surgery cut them short but he was able to go farther the second time around. Snow is melting fast and by next week when we will aim for the summit we are hoping will all be gone.
